French organist and composer Louis Vierne (1870–1937), a student of both Franck and Widor, was appointed organist at Notre-Dame in Paris at the age of 30 and held that position until his death. Among his compositions are numerous works for organ, including six organ symphonies, the first three of which are reprinted here. Of this music, Grove’s Dictionary of Music and Musicians says: «The best of his organ works are brilliantly effective and of considerable harmonic originality.»
