With the “Concerto for Orchestra,” Henle inaugurates a series of affordable study scores based on the text of the Bartók Complete Edition. When Bartók received the commission to compose this piece from Serge Koussevitsky in May 1943, it meant not only financial support, but also an important creative impetus for the gravely ill composer. By October, the five-movement concerto, which Koussevitsky enthusiastically dubbed “the best orchestral work of the last 25 years,” was already complete. The first performances in the winter of 1944–45 were also very successful. Nevertheless, Bartók was moved to set down an alternate ending, which the composer, who passed away in September 1945, would never be destined to hear. Bartók specialist Klára Móricz includes both versions in her edition and summarises the history and transmission of the “Concerto for Orchestra” in a fascinating foreword. A brief commentary section provides information about the principles underlying the edition.

Complete Piano Concertos in Full Score

The five Beethoven piano concertos have long been staples of the pianist’s repertoire and are perennial favorites of concert audiences. Here in one convenient volume are all five, reproduced directly from the authoritative Breitkopf and Härtel edition, including most of the composer’s own cadenzas.
These concertos reveal the steady development of Beethoven’s mastery of pianistic and orchestral resources through his early and middle periods. The first two, No. 1 in C Major, Op. 15 (1795), and No. 2 in B-flat Major, Op. 19 (before 1793), reflect the youthful exuberance of Beethoven’s earlier style. No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 37 (1800), is «one of the most successful embodiments of Beethoven’s «C Minor mood'» (New Grove Dictionary) and No. 4 in G Major, Op. 58 (1805–1806), is considered a milestone in concerto development. No. 5 in E-flat Major, Op. 73 («Emperor,» 1809), clearly illustrates Beethoven’s further innovations in concerto structure.
Pianists, musicians, conductors, and students seeking to learn more about Beethoven’s impact on musical history, and lovers of music in general, will appreciate having these concertos in one handy, inexpensive edition.

Concerto in C Major, Op. 56 (Triple Concerto): and Fantasia in C Minor, Op. 80 (Choral Fantasy) in Full Score

This volume contains two of Beethoven’s most unusual, highly innovative and original works: the Concerto in C Major, Op. 56, for piano, violin, cello and orchestra; and the Fantasia in C Minor, Op. 80, for piano, chorus and orchestra.
To this day, the «Triple Concerto» remains part of a rare breed in the literature–a fascinating symphonic framework of interaction between the classical orchestra and a trio of intimately interdependent soloists. The work remains a favorite vehicle of the great Beethoven specialists, with numerous recordings by legendary performers.
The «Choral Fantasy» is a rarity in the Beethoven canon of ensemble music, uniting the virtuoso display of a semi-improvisational solo piano with the vocal and instrumental richness of chorus and orchestra. Said to have been composed under great time pressure, the Fantasy concludes with an extensive choral setting of a text by an unknown poet: «Schmeichelnd hold und lieblich klingen» («Flatteringly lovely and fair are the sounds of our life’s harmonies…Accept gladly the gifts of beautiful art…»).
Reprinted from the authoritative Breitkopf & Härtel editions, this volume offers musicians and music lovers an inexpensive, high-quality full score of two exceptional works.

The Six Brandenburg Concertos

This Dover edition makes available in miniature format Bach’s six Brandenburg Concertos, composed while he served as Kapellmeister to Prince Leopold of Cöthen from 1717 to 1723.
In these masterpieces — dedicated in 1721 to the Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg — Bach abandoned the standard type of concerto grosso in favor of a variety of solo combinations, resulting in music of intense, appealing originality, complex textures and development, and unprecedented instrumentation. Among the most frequently performed and recorded in the entire repertoire, the concertos are reprinted here from the definitive Bach-Gesellschaft edition. They include No. 1 in F Major, No. 2 in F Major, No. 3 in G Major, No. 4 in G Major, No. 5 in D Major, and No. 6 in B-flat Major.
These six works are published in full score with bar-numbered movements. Ideal for study in the classroom, at home, or in the concert hall, this affordable, high-quality, conveniently sized volume will be the edition of choice for music students and music lovers alike.

Great Romantic Cello Concertos in Full Score

Lovers of the rich burnished tones of the cello will appreciate the keynote of this volume: complete scores of three great romantic cello concertos brought together in one convenient source. Spanning the last half of the nineteenth century, the compositions reveal extraordinary lyricism, imagination, and individual interpretation of the concerto form.
The works in this volume are Robert Schumann: Cello Concerto in A Minor, Op. 129; Camille Saint-Saëns: Cello Concerto No. 1, Op. 33; and Antonín Dvořák: Cello Concerto in B Minor, Op. 104.
Generations of cellists and music lovers have savored these works for their unique qualities: the Schumann concerto for its ravishing interweaving of cello and orchestra; that of Saint-Saëns for solid musical craftsmanship; the Dvořák work for enchanting melodies and exceptionally rich invention. Now musicians can enjoy the felicities of each work, complete and unabridged, in this sturdy, attractive Dover volume.
Reprinted directly from authoritative editions, this volume offers not only great music but also the quality features that musicians have come to expect from Dover: clear reproduction of musical notation; ample space for analysis, notes, fingerings, etc.; glossaries of musical terms; and more. For playing or study, this inexpensive edition is a must for every serious cellist.
