¿Esta obra, hábilmente compuesta, fue realmente escrita durante una partida de bolos? La leyenda persiste, aunque no existe una fuente fiable. En cualquier caso, llama la atención la inusual instrumentación: tener un clarinete en lugar de violín era sin duda habitual en los tríos de piano; pero además Mozart reemplazó el violonchelo por una viola, su instrumento favorito según él mismo admitió. Como resultado, la viola tiene una parte mucho más fuerte que la que suele tener el violonchelo. Nuestra edición única de esta boyante obra se tomó del volumen que contiene los tríos para piano completos (HN 247), que fue revisado e incluye los últimos hallazgos académicos.

Haydn’s numerous divertimentos for strings and wind are cheerful, functional music about whose genesis we know very little. Many stem from Haydn’s early years, when the composer had to keep his head above water with musical odd jobs. Thus the Divertimento in G major Hob. II:9, for the unusual scoring of two oboes, two horns, two violins, two violas and bass, was quite possibly commissioned in the 1750s. In its exuberant vitality, Haydn’s genius is already unmistakable here.

Mendelssohn is considered a self-critical composer, who repeatedly reworked a number of his pieces until he deemed them worthy to be published. The path to his first Piano Trio was particularly rocky: only after several attempts was he able to complete it in the summer of 1839; it appeared in1840 after further revisions. This perfectionism paid off, for Mendelssohn’s d minor Trio was immediately received with enthusiasm. Robert Schumann wrote: “It is the master trio of the present day, like those of Beethoven in Bb and D and that of Franz Schubert in Eb were in their time; a very beautiful composition which after years will still delight grandchildren and great-grandchildren.” Which was to prove true: even today, it numbers among the most popular works in the trio repertoire in general. The trio, taken from the volume Mendelssohn · Piano Trios HN 957, is now available from Henle for the first time also as a practical single edition.

17 Divertimenti for Various Instruments

In 1771, in the midst of a successful tour of Italy, Mozart received a commission to write a dramatic serenata for the marriage of the Archduke Ferdinand. This serenata so overshadowed Hasse’s new opera, which was composed for the same occasion, that Hasse is reported to have said the prophetic words: «This boy will cause us all to be forgotten.» In the same year Mozart composed his first divertimento (K.113), the first of some twenty-three that he composed during his lifetime. He was not yet 16 years old.
The seventeen works in this edition range from K.113 to K.334 and span the years 1771 to 1779. These short, sparkling, brilliant pieces were created for a typical ensemble of 6 to 14 players for strings, clarinet, bassoon, oboe, horns, flute, trumpets, and drums. They have been reproduced from the definitive Breitkopf & Härtel Complete Works Edition.
