En 1849, Schumann regaló obras de música de cámara a tres instrumentos de viento: el clarinete con la obra “Drei Fantasiestücke” op. 73, la trompa con el Adagio y Allegro op. 70, y el oboe con estos “Drei Romanzen” op. 94. En el primer romance tenemos un tono parecido a una balada en menor. El segundo romance parece una canción sin letra, y está en La mayor, mientras que el final, con sus motivos llamativos y arpegios de piano, recuerda los poemas populares del norte de Europa de la época. Compuestos en diciembre de 1849, los Romanzen fueron presentados a Clara, la esposa de Schumann, como regalo de Navidad. Este manuscrito no se conserva, pero se han podido consultar algunos bocetos autógrafos para nuestro Urtext. Throughout his life he had been more familiar with keyboard and stringed instruments, so the composer this time found himself in rather unfamiliar territory. Yet he instantly hit upon the infl ections and special characteristics of these instruments. To ensure that the parts refl ected the technical and tonal idiosyncrasies of each instrument, he asked advice of wind soloists of his acquaintance before publication. His Sonata op. 166 met with the highest approval of the oboist; a passage in a letter bears witness to this: “It went like clockwork”. We were able to consult the autograph for the first time for this Urtext edition.
