Las circunstancias en las que surgieron estas poéticas “Soirée Pieces” (de ahí su título original) son bastante sorprendentes. En 1849, Dresde se vio afectada por una violenta agitación política que finalmente obligó a Schumann a huir con Clara al campo. Sin embargo, nada de esto es evidente en la música de estas tres piezas, cuyo carácter idílico significa un anhelo de armonía y aislamiento. Originalmente concebidos para clarinete, ya en la impresión original se acompañaron de piezas alternativas para violín y violonchelo. A sonata for oboe, one for clarinet and one for bassoon were thus composed; yet he was not to hear the premieres. As far as form and infl ection are concerned, the three wind sonatas op. 166 –168 hark back to the gallant style of the 18th century and thus approach the neoclassicism movement around 1920. Humour, wit and fine irony characterise these works for wind.
